ABOUT FRANKFURT
Frankfurt is the financial and commercial capital of Germany. Home to the European Central Bank and the most important stock exchange in the country, it also boasts the best collection of museums next to Berlin. The city’s parks, gardens, original old taverns, elegant shops and vibrant cultural life provide a perfect foil to the ultra-modern architectural style of its high-rise buildings.
The Main River divides the city into north and south. The business district lies north of the river with the quaint houses and pubs, bars and restaurants of Sachsenhausen lying to the south. For a panoramic view over Frankfurt, head for the Zeilgalerie – a shopping centre at An der Hauptwache. Here you can take a glass lift to the roof and look out over the city. Frankfurt’s restored cathedral lies behind the Historischer Garten and is dominated by an elegant 15th century Gothic-style tower. Check out the Romerberg nearby. It is Frankfurt’s oldest square and boasts beautifully restored 14th and 15th century buildings. The Stadelsches Kunstinstitut at Schaumainkai 63 houses a fabulous collection of works by artists such as Rembrandt, Renoir and Vermeer to name but a few. The Deutsches Filmmuseum is also well worth a visit with interesting exhibitions, comprehensive archives and special film events. A visit to the Goethe Haus at Grosser Hirschgraben 23-25 is a must for anyone interested in German literature. The house where the poet, playwright and philosopher was born in 1749 is now a museum and library.

If all this cultural activity makes you thirsty, head for one of the city’s many apple-wine taverns in Alt Sachsenhausen. These taverns serve Ebbelwoi (Frankfurt dialect for Apfelwein) along with local specialities. An abundance of restaurants can be found around the Hauptbahnhof area, the Kalbacher Grasse and the Grosse Bockenheimer Strasse area. Pubs and bars are in abundance – particularly in the Sachsenhausen area – and check out the city’s excellent theatre, ballet and opera scene. For the shopaholic, Frankfurt is heaven. Head for the main shopping street, Zeil, and visit the upmarket fashion boutiques just off Fressgasse.
